By:"George Winchester Stone","George Morrow Kahrl"
Published on 1979-12-01 by Southern Illinois Univ Pr

The life of this actor, manager, playwright, and eighteenth-century gentleman is here refracted through the volurninous correspondence and analyses of roles, plays, and performances in this, no doubt final, biography of David Garrick. As the direct result of modern scholarship accessible only since the 1960s, it is now possible to appraise fully the life of this remarkable person who was born in Lichfield 19 February 1717, a childhood friend of Samuel Johnson, who became the greatest English theatrical luminary who ever lived, and who when he died 20 January 1779 was mourned by the nation and eulogized by Dr. Johnson as one whose death “eclipsed the gaiety of nations.” For twenty-nine years (1747–1776) Garrick managed Drury Lane theatre, caring passionately for its well-being. His own acting set the pace for the performances, his discipline carried it on, and his theatrical innovations attracted the audiences on which the lives, hopes, and families of some 140 actors, actresses, singers, dancers, and others depended. In addition, he wrote, adapted, or altered some 49 plays and wrote nearly 100 prologues. What emerges from this big, new critical biography is a fully drawn portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman, with a wide range of acquaintances, elegant socially, morally, and personally, and an engaging conversationalist with and respecter of women of mark and with his closest friends. He was also, as the evidence now shows, the solid link with his own age and the great dramatic artists of the past, from the Restoration playwrights to Massinger, Jonson, Shakespeare, and early English dramatists.

Published on 2011-03-01 by eBookIt.com

We are all using dangerous, outdated, old economic strategies to protect and grow our money in the so-called 'new economy.' Most of us don't even know it. Every economy is, in some sense, 'new.' However, applying the rules from an 'older' economy to a 'newer' one during times of transition is a recipe for financial ruin.Economic transitions have been around for centuries . . . the difference is that now they are worldwide in scope and affect everything rather than local in nature with limited affects. While you sleep at night, while you go to work each day, something insidious is actually stealing your financial future. It isn't anyone's fault really. There is a massive reallocation of wealth as we transition into the new economy. There are two sides to this story. Because of the changing rules of money, the greatest transfer of wealth in the nation and the world is now unfolding. Money is about to flow away from the financially uninformed and flow towards the financially well-informed in the years ahead. This is nothing new, really. Money has always worked this way. The good news is that average members of the public now have more ways than ever before to understand this process and to take appropriate action.I am sure you are aware of the rising price of gold that's been going on for almost 10 years now. Most recently, gold started climbing with even greater speed. History repeats itself again and again. Whenever governments start to dilute their money investors transfer their money into gold. Gold has intrinsic value and will always prevail in any economy. What most non-investors and investors -- including yourself -- probably you don't realize is that although gold is a great way to preserve your wealth, it's silver that could actually make you rich! The price of gold has already risen dramatically, but silver is just beginning its climb.Nine Reasons Why Silver is a Unique Wealth Building Instrument - Silver, like gold, has intrinsic value- Silver has been in a commodity bull cycle since 2000- Silver is a safe hedge against currency inflation- Silver is a security choice during times of financial crisis- Silver is rarer than gold- Silver is used in 90% of all electronics -- and its mostly non-renewable- Silver inventories are very low- Silver leasing -- the scam will be exposed soon- Silver investment markets are expanding thanks to the ChineseWhat You Will Learn From Building Wealth with SilverYou will discover why the Federal Reserve was created and why you and I have been kept in the dark about its true purpose. You will find out why the U.S. dollar is quietly being destroyed without fanfare and the reason this process is being publically denied and covered up. You will see why unemployment numbers, along with many other economic figures, are rigged, and how we're are being lied to about their true significance. The insights you get from the first few chapters alone can change your life. Even if you were to study at Harvard for five years -- which would cost you, by the way, over $95,000 -- you would not have the knowledge you need to get any closer to this kind of insider information.Learn why silver is the best investment opportunity right now.Get the facts on silver production and consumption, and all the details behind silver's projected five- to eight-fold increase over the next several months.

Published on 2015-06-16 by Penguin

“Thanks to this gripping new book … we know more about how they do it. And it’s even more shocking than you think.” —The Independent When most people think of the drama of global finance, they think of stocks and bonds, venture capital, high-tech IPOs, and complex mortgage-backed securities. But commodities? Crude oil and soybeans? Copper and wheat? What could be more boring? That’s exactly what the elite commodity traders want you to think. They don’t seek the media spotlight. They don’t want to be as famous as Warren Buffett or Bill Gross. Their astonishing wealth was created in near-total obscurity, either in closely held private companies or deep within large banks and corporations, where commodity profits and losses weren’t broken out. Now Kate Kelly, the bestselling author of Street Fighters, takes us inside this secretive inner circle that controls so many things we all depend on. She gets closer than any previous reporter to understanding these whip-smart, aggressive, and often egomaniacal men who bet millions every day on a blend of facts, analysis, and pure gut instinct.

By:"Malachi O'Connor","Barry Dornfeld"
Published on 2014-10-07 by PublicAffairs

Not just another day at the office … or is it? The surgical technician ducks as a stapler flies past his head during the concluding moments of a lengthy and difficult operation…. The high-powered, internationally known finance guru seeks to turn fortunes around at the university of which he is now president … and finds himself a leader without followers…. The powerful satraps silently sabotage the CEO's desperately needed growth initiative.… These are “moments that cannot be ignored”—events, actions, comments that stop people in their tracks and, in one fell swoop, make it blindingly clear that an organization is stuck and unable to move forward. And they have become regular occurrences in today's corporations, non-profits, and educational institutions as new forms of work, communication, and technology expose the ways in which an organization's culture—or “the way we do things around here”—conflicts with new competitive demands. The result: telling incidents—all too visible elephants in the room—that reveal underlying conflicts as well as hidden assets. In The Moment You Can't Ignore, Malachi O'Connor and Barry Dornfeld tell fascinating “you are there” stories of people and organizations as they encounter and then navigate through and beyond these un-ignorable moments, and show what we can learn from them. They outline the big questions organizations need to ask themselves about identity, leadership, and the capacity to innovate that an understanding of culture can help answer, and deliver powerful insights into recognizing and harnessing hidden assets that point in the direction of a new future. In our age of porous organizations and constant change, The Moment You Can't Ignore demonstrates that the adage, “culture eats strategy for lunch,” is more relevant now than ever.

Book Culture, Values and Ethics in Social Work PDF Free

Download Culture, Values and Ethics in Social Work PDF Books
By:"Richard Hugman"
Published on 2012-09-10 by Routledge

This groundbreaking book examines the ways in which questions of culture and diversity impact on the values and ethics of social work. Using detailed case studies to illustrate key points for practice, Richard Hugman discusses how social workers can develop cross-cultural engagement in practice and work creatively with the tensions it sometimes involves. Debates rage over whether there is a core set of unchangeable social work values or whether they might be different at different times and for different people. This textbook proposes a new approach of ‘ethical pluralism’ for social work practice, in which both shared humanity and the rich variety of cultures contribute to a more dynamic way of understanding social work’s underpinning values and ethics. In particular, this book explores the implications of a pluralist approach to ethics for the central questions of: Human rights and social justice Caring relationships Social and personal responsibilities Agency and autonomy Values such as truth, honesty, openness, service and competence. It is vital that social workers understand the values and ethics of their profession as a crucial part of the foundations on which practice is built and this is the only text to explore the connections between culture, values and ethics and fully develop the pluralist approach in social work. Culture, Values and Ethics in Social Work is essential reading for all social work students and academics.

By:"Robert Sellers"
Published on 2016-11-01 by Macmillan

Peter O’Toole was supremely talented, a unique leading man and one of the most charismatic actors of his generation. Described by his friend Richard Burton as “the most original actor to come out of Britain since the war,” O’Toole was also unpredictable, with a dangerous edge he brought to his roles and to his real life. With the help of exclusive interviews with colleagues and close friends, Robert Sellers' Peter O’Toole: The Definitive Biography paints the first complete picture of this complex and much-loved man. The book reveals what drove him to extremes, why he drank to excess for many years and hated authority, but it also describes a man who was fiercely intelligent, with a great sense of humor and huge energy. Giving full weight to his extraordinary career, this is an insightful, funny, and moving tribute to an iconic actor who made a monumental contribution to theater and cinema.

Published on 2016-01-05 by PublicAffairs

Whether you work in a home office or abroad, business success in our ever more globalized and virtual world requires the skills to navigate through cultural differences and decode cultures foreign to your own. Renowned expert Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain where people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together. When you have Americans who precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans who get straight to the point (“your presentation was simply awful”); Latin Americans and Asians who are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians who think the best boss is just one of the crowd—the result can be, well, sometimes interesting, even funny, but often disastrous. Even with English as a global language, it's easy to fall into cultural traps that endanger careers and sink deals when, say, a Brazilian manager tries to fathom how his Chinese suppliers really get things done, or an American team leader tries to get a handle on the intra-team dynamics between his Russian and Indian team members. In The Culture Map, Erin Meyer provides a field-tested model for decoding how cultural differences impact international business. She combines a smart analytical framework with practical, actionable advice for succeeding in a global world.

Case Histories in Business Ethics illustrates and extends the role of case histories in the teaching and study of business ethics. Typically, case histories are used to illustrate assertions or arguments, or to stimulate debate about an issue within business ethics. This volume examines that role, illustrating the link between case histories and more general theoretical approaches to business ethics. It also discusses the role of case histories in engaging the wider cognitive and affective capacities of the student and therefore the development of character.

Published on 2005 by Routledge

This is a richly detailed account of the way the sex industry works, and one of the few empirical studies that investigates the off street industry in Britain. The book seeks to advance a greater knowledge of the social organisation of the sex industry by uncovering the day to day activities of women involved in the indoor markets. What types of occupational risks do women experience in work of this kind? How do these hazards affect their personal lives? A key concern throughout the book is to assess whether women are passive victims of the circumstances of prostitution or whether they understand and calculate their responses to danger. Drawing upon both sociological and criminological theories, and on detailed research in the city of Birmingham, the author addresses these questions by estimating the rationality of those responses and by providing a measure of how women make sense of different risks. Sex Work: a risky business describes how women create complex psychological and emotional techniques to maintain their sanity while selling sex, and goes on to argue that the indoor sex markets in Britain have a distinct 'occupational culture' with a set of social norms, code of conduct and moral hierarchies that make it a high regulated workplace despite its illicit and sometimes illegal nature.

From the golden-haired, curly-headed half of Simon & Garfunkel--a memoir (of sorts): artful, moving, lyrical; the making of a musician; the evolution of a man, a portrait of a life-long friendship and collaboration that became one of the most successful singing duos of their time. Art Garfunkel writes about his life before, during, and after Simon & Garfunkel . . . about their folk-rock music in the roiling age that embraced and was defined by their pathbreaking sound. He writes about growing up in the 1940s and '50s (son of a traveling salesman), a middle class Jewish boy, living in a red brick semi-attached house in Kew Gardens, Queens, a kid who was different--from the age of five feeling his vocal cords \

Published on 2015-04-02 by John Blake Publishing

Benedict Cumberbatch has played detective and monster, barrister and scientist, politician and painter, comic and spy. Still only in his thirties, he has become one of Britain's foremost acting talents, excelling in theatre, television, radio and cinema. With a string of starring and supporting roles, he has portrayed contemporary icons, historical figures and fictional favourites, from Stephen Hawking, to William Pitt the Younger, to Frankenstein. He has become a radio comedy staple too, as the bungling airline pilot Captain Martin Crieff, in Radio 4's Cabin Pressure. But inevitably, he is still best known for his idiosyncratic and boldly 21st century incarnation of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV series, Sherlock. In this book, Justin Lewis traces Benedict Cumberbatch's career to date, from his early promise in Harrow School plays, through his first supporting roles in film, theatre and TV, to national and international acclaim.
